Samantha Backman's Story
At
the age of twenty-four I was diagnosed with cervical cancer.
I was horrified. I just had my first child and the prospect
of not seeing her grow up, much less being alive for her
twenty first birthday, filled me with trepidation, fear,
and overwhelming remorse. I've never been so scared, in
my then, very short life.
As
most people do, I consulted my local doctor, who referred
me to a gynecologist, who then referred me to an oncologist.
Within a few short weeks I was under the knife. Supposedly,
the cancer had been removed.
A little over twelve months later - after the birth of
my second child - I was diagnosed with the same condition.
I cried for a week. Another operation ensured and this
time I was told again that all the cancer had been removed
and the chances of returning were almost zero. |

I declined
suggestions of chemotherapy thinking that if all the cancer
had been removed and there was no sign of cancer in any
lymph nodes, then why would I need to put a poison into
my body, which would have meant having to stop breast-feeding
my child?
Believing totally in my doctor's diagnosis,
I was convinced I would see my children grow up and have
the pleasure of being blessed with grandchildren. These
dreams came to a sudden halt several years later when
I visited my doctor due to unexplained bleeding.
To this day I can remember bursting into uncontrolled
weeping upon hearing my doctor's words, "I'm sorry
to say, but it looks as though the cancer has returned."
Tests later confirmed this.
I had another operation and Chemotherapy was again recommended.
I decline this procedure yet again because over the years
I've known several people who had chemotherapy and watched
how most of them went down hill very quickly, or at best,
had a short period of remission but their cancer came
back with-a-vengeance. However, I vowed this was going
to be my last operation; instinctively, I knew there had
to be another way.
Whether
by coincidence or fate, but within days of that operation
I was given a book that looked at the association between
diet, lifestyle and disease rates. I read it from cover
to cover and two days later I began eating only natural
foods. A drastic move for someone who was raised on a
farm eating everything from tongue to sweetbread to the
boiled to death three vegetables, followed by bread and
butter pudding. I also stopped eating all processed foods;
bread, pasta, cereals, processed grains and of course,
sugar.
I
discovered that nearly 80% of diseases are diet related.
In other words, eight out of every ten people are feeding
themselves their own disease. I call it, death by knife
and fork. I was one of those eight out of ten.
The average person might think of a farm as a perfect
environment for a clean, healthy upbringing. In my case,
not so! Our food was cooked to death; high in sugars and
processed grains; and all sorts of chemicals and sprays
were used on the animals and in the fields. (Not to mention
the chemicals I was using on my own body - shampoos, deodorants,
perfumes etc.) In fact, one of the chemical fertilisers
used on our farm was a product called Super (organo-phosphate).
I read recently that when Super was banned in Israel,
their cancer rate dropped by 30%. That piece of information
certainly got my attention!
With the diet and lifestyle changes I was making, my life
began to change. The first thing I noticed was that I
had amazing amounts of energy. Even my children commented
on how much younger and energetic I seemed to be.
My husband was also astounded at both my energy levels
and my new enthusiasm for life. I felt totally in control.
And with this feeling of control came a sense of urgency
and a desire to tell the world about my newfound lifestyle.
That led me to studying Nutrition and Dietetics with the
view of bringing health to the world. I soon found out
the world was not ready to be as healthy as I wanted it
to be. I kept studying. I read every thing I could relating
to diet and food related diseases; including dozens of
books on personal development. I listened to motivational
self-help tapes and watched videos on both nutrition and
disease. To say I was consumed with understanding how
human beings function; physically, emotionally, and spiritually,
would be an understatement. |
